Plastic and reconstructive surgery
Plastic surgery is a surgical specialty dealing with restoration, reconstruction, and alteration of the human body. The common misconception among laypeople is that plastic surgery is synonymous with cosmetic surgery. However, there are multiple sub-specialties of plastic surgery. Therefore, plastic surgery can be broadly divided into two sub-specialties- reconstructive field and cosmetic fields.
Although we are saying that reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery are two different fields, there is considerable overlap between these two fields. For example, let’s say you are treating a patient for breast reconstruction after cancer surgery, there is a reconstruction element, and you need to have a decorative element. So therefore, to be a good cosmetic surgeon, you need to have good ground in reconstructive surgery. On the other hand, reconstructive surgery is a part of plastic surgery wherein you aim to give form and function to the reconstructed organ.
Cosmetic surgery in Pune is done for congenital disabilities like cleft lip, cleft palate, hypospadias, hand anomalies. In addition, reconstructive surgery plays a major role in trauma patients and burns patients. Finally, reconstructive surgery plays an important role in cancer reconstruction, especially breast, oral, and head and neck cancers.
